Marshmallows in the Microwave

a pictorial review…

i certainly hope you’re not expecting too much of this little project. i took these pictures for my niece, who i had been chatting with a few nights earlier. i tried to explain what happens when you microwave a marshmallow and told her to give it a whirl. she regretfully informed me that they had no marshmallows. i was sad for her…
🙁

so then i began and realized that i couldn’t withhold this wonderful pictorial from the rest of the word. i started here with two marshmallows. notice the red ears and the glistening forehead. ah you have to love summer and all the sweaty discomfort it brings us all…

me with marshmallows, what a sight...

i had to find a nice plate to place them on. i couldn’t use plastic of coarse, i was already planning to make a small mess, so there was no need for a nasty melted plastic smell to add to the air. i settled for this small plate because it looked like it would be easy to clean later..

ah, two perfect gelatinus ooze-fluffs...

in to the microwave they go! i tried this for the first time camping at pearl lake in beloit, wi with my buddy eric at the age of 11 or 12. we used my parent’s little microwave in their camper. i always slept in a tent, i just didn’t like camping in a small house on wheels. so, back on subject, the marshmallows. oooh! look at those splotches of food! i’m going to get in trouble for showing the inside of the microwave… 🙂

all ready for marshmallow torture...

so there i was standing in my kitchen with my wife wondering what on earth i was doing
holing the camera at the microwave. i started it up, the marshmallows started growing, and i snapped the first shot. poof! stupid flash…

stinking flash!

back to the drawing table a bit, i decided to run the microwave and just open the door
every 10 seconds or so. this seemed to work pretty well, though each time i stopped it, the marshmallows shrunk just a tad during the moments between opening the door and getting the shot off. my wife continued to think me insane. wow! look at that chunk of food! 🙂 so they grew…

so it begins...

and grew…

they keep going...

and grew some more…

and going, and going, and going...

and there you have it folks, two huge mutated marshmallows that just took a nuclear bath. makes me feel all warm and fuzzy knowing i live right between three nuclear power plants…

two hideous blobs of doom!

the aftermath was disturbing as well. they just slowly shrank, and shrank, and shrank some more until they were smaller than when they started. just more dense. i had to try one…

what goes up, must come down...

and i regretted it… they taste *really* nasty after you nuke them. nothing at all like roasting them over an open flame… trust me…

um, yeah...

i hope you enjoyed this little demonstration. it was not originally intended for public consumption, but what the hey… 🙂
